Rogers: Commodities Bull Market Still In Place

Legendary investor Jim Rogers says the bull market in commodities is “still in place” and has a “long way to go.” “The best sector that I know in the world economy is going to continue to be commodities,” Rogers told CNBC on Monday on the launch of the Rogers Global Resources Equity Index which tracks two hundred global resource companies.

Las Vegas January Home Sales Highest Since 2007

A total of 3,669 new and resale houses and condos sold in the Las Vegas metro area last month – the highest for the month of January since 2007, and almost 10% above January last year…READ MORE. My Take: I would take the piece above to be an indicator that the housing market is at bottom and is showing signs of life. It’s not absolute, so I don’t think it’s time to start celebrating. In

Hawaiian Electric (HE) – Green Energy + Sizable Dividend

If you are worried about rising oil prices and wish to cash-in on this re-emerging trend, then Hawaiian Electric (HE) might be a stock for your portfolio.  This is a more conservative way to play the “green” technology field with a stock that carries a +5% annual dividend yield (Since 1998 HE has maintained its 31 cent quarterly dividend.). HE primarily engages in electric utility and banking businesses in the state of Hawaii.  It supplies

Top Public Social and Mobile Prospects

We’ve seen and expect social media and mobile smartphone usage increase in the near and long-term.  How does an investor capitalize on this trend?  What companies are in a position to thrive in the coming months and years? As I’ve stated before, these companies carry a significant amount of risk because of the ever changing technologies that enable social media and smartphones to function.  Five years ago most people would have laughed at you if

Glu Mobile (GLUU) – The Never Ending Climb?

Late last month I publicly recommended buying Glu Mobile (GLUU).  I had recently learned about the company in mid-January when it traded for around $2.  Once I learned about the company and did some research, I became very bullish on the stock.  Since discovery and recommendation, GLUU has seen astronomical share price appreciation.  In about 1 month the stock has over doubled in value.  In the wake of the recent market pull-back this week, the

Sentiment Indicator Soars

Of the 1,068 investors who responded to the e-mail survey, 33% said they believed the United States was in a new bull market—not a bear market rally—and would not revisit the lows of March 2009. In a similar survey last August, only 8% of those responding expressed that belief. And 24% predicted that the S&P 500 would rise by 10% or more over the next 12 months, up from 7% last August…READ MORE. My Take:

What Does Government Do?

…the biggest single thing the federal government does these days is … cut checks. Lots and lots and lots and lots of checks that go to individual citizens — $2.3 trillion worth last year alone. In fact, according to a table buried deep inside the little-noticed Historical Tables volume of the White House’s 2012 budget, these “direct payments to individuals” accounted for more than two-thirds of federal spending in 2010. That’s a post-war high…READ MORE.

Dividend-Investing and Stop-Losses: Stop the Madness

More than a few income investors have fallen prey to the misconception that stop-losses will protect them against downside in their dividend-paying stocks, which they’ve grown progressively fearful of in an environment of rising prices. Unfortunately, setting a stop doesn’t guarantee a specific exit price. All it really does is assure you’ll be sold out if a certain price is breached. If there’s enough volume at a certain level, a relatively minor drop in a

Why I’m Leery of Financial Advisers

Since my first experience with a financial adviser/planner, I’ve been rather leery of them in general.  I do not mean for this piece to be an indictment of the group, but it is a warning to anyone who uses or seeks to use a professional financial adviser/planner. The financial advising/planning (from here on I’m going to use ‘adviser’) is in large part a sales position.  The adviser is there to help you reach some sort

BlackRock bucks the trend in Brazil

Will Landers, managing director for Latin America at BlackRock, which has $10.2bn under management in the region, is overweight Brazil and has been building positions as others pull out. “The government is showing strong resolve and everything is moving in the right direction,” Landers told beyondbrics on Thursday. “But Brazilians are sceptical by nature. And the top-down call right now is that it’s time to move into developed markets.”…READ MORE. My Take: What BlackRock is
